Trip description

Begin your mountain biking journey in Trieste, Italy, and follow the scenic Parenzana Trail, a former railway that once linked Trieste to Poreč. This historic path now winds through Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, offering riders a rich blend of natural beauty and cultural history. Along the way, you’ll explore charming towns like Grožnjan and Motovun, famous for their medieval streets, local art, and truffle-filled forests, all set against rolling hills of vineyards producing world-class wines.

As you continue south, the coastal towns of Rovinj, Pula, and Poreč await. Each has its own story to tell, from the ancient Roman ruins in Pula, including the iconic Roman Colloseum, to the Venetian influence in Rovinj’s old town and the historical richness of Poreč with its UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica. This multi-day trip immerses you in Istria’s fascinating history, diverse landscapes, and unforgettable culinary experiences.

About the trail

The trail is mostly gravel or paved, well-marked, and includes restored tunnels, old railway bridges, and gentle gradients, making it suitable for all levels. Along the way, it passes through charming medieval villages, historical sites, and offers beautiful views of the Istrian countryside.

Surfaces:

Unpaved trail: 33 km
Gravel: 39 km
Paved trail: 22 km
Asphalt: 22 km

Bicycle

For the Parenzana Trail, an e-bike is the most preferred option, as the trail is long and an electric bike allows you to cover more distance in a day, giving you more time for exploration and enjoyment. A full-suspension e-bike is the best choice, especially since some sections of the gravel path can be bumpy. However, a hardtail e-bike or a regular gravel bike is also a great option for those used to off-road riding. A touring bike can work well too, thanks to its relaxed riding style, though some parts of the trail may feel a bit rough.

Equipment

1. Equipment That Can Be Provided

GPS Navigation
For those who need it, we can provide a GPS navigation device – a compact and easy-to-use computer that helps you follow the trail ahead. It shows upcoming turns, important waypoints, and locations of interest. GPS files are included with your travel package and are customized to your specific route, making navigation simple and stress-free.

Bicycle Bags
If you require extra storage, we offer high-quality, water-resistant cycling bags. These bags are easy to mount, durable, and designed to carry your essentials without affecting your ride comfort. Perfect for storing snacks, clothing, tools, or even a camera, they allow you to relax and let the bike handle the load.

2. Equipment That Is Needed

Rider Equipment
A helmet is considered essential and is highly recommended for your safety. Hydration is also important, so be sure to bring water bottles or a hydration pack, especially for more remote sections of the trail where refills may be limited. While towns along the way often have fountains or shops, it’s best to always have enough water on hand.

Bicycle Equipment
Everyone sets up their bike differently, but one key detail to pay attention to is your pedals. If you prefer SPD clipless pedals, make sure to bring your own along with compatible cycling shoes. It’s also recommended to carry a basic repair kit to handle minor mechanical issues on the trail.

Departure Day

The journey begins in Trieste with a classic Italian breakfast and a cappuccino to set the tone. From there, you take a boat across the bay to Muggia, where the Parenzana Trail—and your cycling adventure—officially begins. The route leads you to Koper, a charming coastal town in Slovenia, then continues along the Adriatic shoreline past Izola and on to Piran, Slovenia’s seaside gem. From there, the trail hugs the coast until it reaches the Croatian border.

Soon, Croatia awaits. The Parenzana Trail shifts from smooth asphalt to gravel, signaling a change in terrain and atmosphere. The route leads inland past Buje, a peaceful town marking the departure from the coast. As the day winds down, Grožnjan—a hilltop haven for artists and cyclists alike—welcomes the riders with a well-deserved meal and a night of rest.

Starting in Grožnjan, a hilltop village surrounded by vineyards and famous for its truffles, the day kicks off with incredible views and a peaceful vibe. The Parenzana Trail begins with a thrilling descent, offering sweeping views of the Istrian landscape.

Next, the riders arrive in Motovun, a striking medieval town with ancient walls and cobbled streets, offering panoramic vistas of the valley below. It’s a place you can’t miss. The ride continues through small villages and quiet rural towns, giving riders a glimpse into authentic Istrian life.

For those seeking extra adventure, there’s an option to explore the Baredine Cave before the group heads to Poreč, a picturesque coastal town, where a relaxing evening by the sea and comfortable accommodations await.

The day kicks off in Poreč, where the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica and the charming old city core invite exploration of its rich history. After taking in the sights, riders continue along the coast, enjoying the beaches and lively seaside towns all the way to Vrsar.

As the ride continues, the Limski Fjord begins to reveal its beauty, leading cyclists towards a tranquil forest path. After a short break by the canal, the journey moves on toward Rovinj.

The final stretch takes riders through rural roads toward Rovinj, a picturesque Venetian town known for its colorful buildings, narrow streets, and romantic atmosphere, offering the perfect place to unwind by the sea.

Starting in Rovinj, the journey heads south along the stunning western coastline, winding through a variety of beaches—rocky stretches, hidden coves, and peaceful pebble beaches with crystal-clear waters. The path hugs the sea for a long stretch, offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic.

As the ride progresses, old fortifications and military forts emerge, remnants of the region’s industrial and military history, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past. The mostly easy trails allow for a smooth ride through this beautiful landscape.

The route continues toward Pula, where the impressive Roman ruins, including the iconic amphitheater, await exploration. After a day full of discovery and scenic riding, the evening offers a chance to rest and recharge in this historic city.

On Day Five, riders have the option of a well-deserved free day to relax, or they can continue their journey south to the stunning Cape Kamenjak, the southernmost point of Istria. The ride takes them through charming coastal towns before entering the protected nature park. Once a military base, Cape Kamenjak is now a peaceful haven for relaxation and beach activities.

The park offers a fantastic singletrack that loops around the cape, hugging the shoreline and providing incredible views. Along the way, riders can explore the rich history of the area, from ancient dinosaur footprints to fossil remains, all while enjoying the natural beauty of the place.

After a day of adventure, the route leads back to Pula, where cyclists can celebrate an unforgettable week of exploration and memories.

On the final day, we pack up and get ready to say goodbye. With bags loaded and memories made, we make our way to the airport or begin the journey home, carrying with us the highlights and stories of an unforgettable ride

                  Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the ideal period to book a tour in Istria?

The ideal period to visit Istria runs from April to October, offering mild weather suited for outdoor fun. May and September are favorites among travelers because of their pleasant temperatures and lower crowd levels. Many tend to avoid July and August because of the heat.

What kind of accommodation and meals can I expect during the tour?

Guests stay in carefully chosen bike-friendly hotels to ensure a comfortable experience. The Mediterranean location means the food is fantastic—so good, in fact, that many guests say they miss the meals more than the trails after the tour ends. Most packages include half board (breakfast and dinner), while lunch is up to you—whether it’s at a local restaurant or a picnic in nature.

Should I bring my own bike, or can I rent one?

While you can bring your own bike, renting is often more convenient. We work with a trusted supplier to select the right bike for you, which will be ready and waiting at the start of the tour. During the trip, the bikes stay with you at the hotel and are available whenever you need them. Please note that the cost of bike rental is an additional fee on top of the starting tour price.

What equipment should I have with me?

Our experienced guides carry all the essential bike repair tools, including allen keys, puncture kits, pumps, and more. They also bring a first aid kit for your safety. If you’re used to bringing your own tools or gear, you’re welcome to bring them along.

Regarding equipment, wearing a helmet is mandatory, and body protection is highly recommended depending on the style of tour you choose. Drinking water is available throughout Istria and is generally safe and easy to access.

How long does a typical cycling day last?

While we offer set tour itineraries, we always customize them to suit the group’s preferences. A typical cycling day lasts between 4 and 6 hours, depending on the route and if a shuttle to the starting point is included. Keep in mind that the shuttle can add some extra time to the overall day. The schedule usually includes regular breaks for rest, meals, and sightseeing, making the pace enjoyable and flexible.

What if I come across a part of the trail I can’t ride?

The difficulty of the route is chosen together with the group and adjusted to match the average riding level. Since Istria is a well-connected region with many roads and trail options, it’s usually possible to avoid challenging sections and replace them with alternative routes, keeping the ride enjoyable for everyone.

How do I get the final price for the tour?

The final price is provided after we customize your tour based on your preferences, group size, and selected options. Once all details are confirmed, we’ll send you a detailed quote outlining the total cost, including accommodation, meals, bike rentals (if needed), and any additional services. This way, you know exactly what’s included before you book. For a quick response, feel free to reach out to us via the contact form on our website.

                  Is travel insurance required?

Yes, we highly recommend having travel insurance that covers medical expenses and any potential issues related to cycling activities. While it’s not mandatory to book the tour, having insurance gives you peace of mind in case of unexpected situations during your trip.
