Trip description

Take on an unforgettable mountain biking adventure that spans three countries, starting in Trieste, Italy, and weaving through Slovenia into Croatia, with the final destination at the southernmost point of Istria in Pula. This tour is designed for the seasoned biker who’s ready for more—a journey where you leave your bags behind and fully immerse yourself in the landscape.

Pedal through dense forests, quiet villages, and bustling coastal cities, where nature meets culture at every turn. As you explore the wild side of Istria, you’ll encounter untamed terrain and rich historical sites that paint a vivid picture of the region. This adventure isn’t just about covering miles; it’s about slowing down, connecting with the land, and embracing the journey as it unfolds. For those who seek challenge, discovery, and a new adventure, this is the ultimate ride.

About the trail

The trail begins in the center of Trieste, but instead of following the usual coastal route, riders head inland, climbing into the hills above the city. Here, a mix of natural trails, forest paths, and quiet village roads guide the way toward central Istria, where the true gravel section of the Parenzana Trail begins. From this point onward, as the route continues along the coastline and further south, riders can expect a varied terrain—gravel roads, natural path, stretches of asphalt, and the occasional trail

Bicycle

The Trans Istria tour is designed with the full-suspension e-bike in mind—perfect for handling the region’s varied and often challenging terrain. Its electric assistance makes longer stretches and steep climbs feel effortless, while the suspension offers comfort and control on rough trails and gravel roads. This setup lets you ride further, explore more, and fully enjoy every part of the journey through Istria.

Equipment

Rider Equipment
A helmet is considered essential and is highly recommended for your safety. Hydration is also important, so be sure to bring water bottles or a hydration pack, especially for more remote sections of the trail where refills may be limited. While towns along the way often have fountains or shops, it’s best to always have enough water on hand.

Bicycle Equipment
Everyone sets up their bike differently, but one key detail to pay attention to is your pedals. If you prefer SPD clipless pedals, make sure to bring your own along with compatible cycling shoes. It’s also recommended to carry a basic repair kit to handle minor mechanical issues on the trail.

Departure Day

After a classic cappuccino in Trieste, we begin our ride, gradually making our way uphill. As we pedal out of the city, the views of the valley unfold before us, and the climb intensifies as we head toward Slovenia. The terrain becomes more rugged as we approach the “Ridge,” where the path hugs the edge of the cliff offering stuning views of the terrain we will explore in the days ahead. We continue on through the hills, reaching the summit of Zbevnica, where we’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. From there, we descend into Buzet, our stop for the night.

After breakfast, we set off into the region’s untouched wilderness, following a scenic trail known for its series of waterfalls. The ride is challenging at times but rewards us with incredible natural spots, including a picturesque village famous for its old watermills and rock pools.

We then arrive at a tiny hilltop settlement often called the world’s smallest city, well-known for its rakija — a traditional fruit brandy infused with honey, herbs, and other local flavors.

From there, we ride through rolling hills, passing peaceful villages and glimpses of quiet rural life, eventually reaching a serene lake nestled in the heart of Istria. As the sun begins to set, we arrive at Motovun, where we spend the night

Day three is all about a smoother, more flowing ride, but still packed with fun. The morning starts in Motovun, a hilltop town surrounded by vineyards and dense truffle-rich forests. This area is famous for its food and wine, and as we set off, we’ll be rolling through some of Istria’s most scenic countryside.

Early on, we’ll hop onto the Parenzana Trail, a former railway that once connected Trieste and Poreč. Now a cycling route, it winds through hills, tunnels, and charming villages, offering an easygoing but beautiful ride. Later, we’ll leave the Parenzana behind and head into the woods, taking on some of the most exciting, flowy singletracks in the region—a perfect mix of fun and speed. By the end of the day, we’ll roll into Poreč, where the Adriatic Sea marks the perfect finish to the ride.

Starting in Poreč, we explore the charming old city center, famous for its UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica and its narrow, cobblestone streets full of history. After soaking up the sights, we head along the coastline, taking in the laid-back coastal life with its fishing boats and cafés.

We then move inland, connecting to local trails that lead us through the woods toward Limski Kanal, a stunning fjord. We’ll have time to enjoy its peaceful waters and dramatic cliffs before making our way toward Rovinj. As we ride, we pass through small villages and ancient ruins, all along easy roads. The day ends in Rovinj, where we’ll explore the old town’s winding streets and enjoy beautiful views of the Adriatic.

Starting in Rovinj, we head south along the beautiful western coastline, winding through beaches of all kinds—rocky stretches, hidden coves, and quiet pebble beaches with crystal-clear water. The path hugs the sea for a good while, offering breathtaking views of the Adriatic.

While cycling through gentle terrain, we come across quiet relics of the past — subtle reminders of the region’s layered history, now slowly reclaimed by nature.

We slowly make our way toward Pula, where we’ll explore the city’s impressive Roman ruins, including the iconic amphitheater. After a full day of riding and discovery, we’ll rest and recharge in this historic town.

We begin our day in Pula and head south, making our way toward Cape Kamenjak, the southernmost tip of the region. As we ride through coastal towns that thrive on beach life, we eventually enter the protected park, which not only served as a military base but has a far older history to uncover.

We hop onto a singletrack that loops around the cape, offering stunning sea views at every turn. But this ride is more than just beautiful scenery—it’s a step into prehistory. As we cycle, we pass dinosaur footprints, connecting us to the ancient past of this remarkable area.

Cape Kamenjak is a place like no other, and after taking in all its natural beauty and history, we begin the journey back to Pula. We’ll spend our final evening in the city, reflecting on the incredible adventures of the trip.

On the final day, it’s time to pack up and prepare for the journey home. Afterward, we head to the airport or continue on our way back, reflecting on the experiences of the tour.

                  Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the ideal period to book a tour in Istria?

The ideal period to visit Istria runs from April to October, offering mild weather suited for outdoor fun. May and September are favorites among travelers because of their pleasant temperatures and lower crowd levels. Many tend to avoid July and August because of the heat.

What kind of accommodation and meals can I expect during the tour?

Guests stay in carefully chosen bike-friendly hotels to ensure a comfortable experience. The Mediterranean location means the food is fantastic—so good, in fact, that many guests say they miss the meals more than the trails after the tour ends. Most packages include half board (breakfast and dinner), while lunch is up to you—whether it’s at a local restaurant or a picnic in nature.

Should I bring my own bike, or can I rent one?

While you can bring your own bike, renting is often more convenient. We work with a trusted supplier to select the right bike for you, which will be ready and waiting at the start of the tour. During the trip, the bikes stay with you at the hotel and are available whenever you need them. Please note that the cost of bike rental is an additional fee on top of the starting tour price.

What equipment should I have with me?

Our experienced guides carry all the essential bike repair tools, including allen keys, puncture kits, pumps, and more. They also bring a first aid kit for your safety. If you’re used to bringing your own tools or gear, you’re welcome to bring them along.

Regarding equipment, wearing a helmet is mandatory, and body protection is highly recommended depending on the style of tour you choose. Drinking water is available throughout Istria and is generally safe and easy to access.

How long does a typical cycling day last?

While we offer set tour itineraries, we always customize them to suit the group’s preferences. A typical cycling day lasts between 4 and 6 hours, depending on the route and if a shuttle to the starting point is included. Keep in mind that the shuttle can add some extra time to the overall day. The schedule usually includes regular breaks for rest, meals, and sightseeing, making the pace enjoyable and flexible.

What if I come across a part of the trail I can’t ride?

The difficulty of the route is chosen together with the group and adjusted to match the average riding level. Since Istria is a well-connected region with many roads and trail options, it’s usually possible to avoid challenging sections and replace them with alternative routes, keeping the ride enjoyable for everyone.

How do I get the final price for the tour?

The final price is provided after we customize your tour based on your preferences, group size, and selected options. Once all details are confirmed, we’ll send you a detailed quote outlining the total cost, including accommodation, meals, bike rentals (if needed), and any additional services. This way, you know exactly what’s included before you book. For a quick response, feel free to reach out to us via the contact form on our website.
